Introduction

The community of Kugluktuk is north of the Arctic Circle so each summer there are approximately 60 days during which the sun does not set. The sun is never directly overhead in the arctic but always at an angle as it circles around us remaining somewhere above the horizon.

The photos on this page were taken at midnight on June 21. A small group of us left Kugluktuk at 10 p.m. walking along the shoreline. A second group travelling by pickup truck found us at midnight. You can see Kugluktuk in the distance among the rocky hills.

There is one large bush without leaves in the photos. It was the only large plant that we were aware of in the region. We nicknamed it the "Coppermine Tree".
